Claim: Piracy is what happens on the sea

Claim: Piracy is what happens on the sea with ships. Copyright infringement isn’t “Piracy”.

Response: Whenever I hear this argument, I imagine the person typing it must be really young. This is just a sidetrack into an unimportant semantic discussion about whether or not “piracy” should be used to describe copyright violations. As humans, we understand that one word can have multiple meanings. Besides, the PirateBay and the PirateParty both use the word “Pirate” in their names, so anyone who wants to question the use of the word needs to convince pirates first. As things currently stand, most pirates seem perfectly happy to use the “pirate” label.
